Frederick County Community Grant Program – Maryland

Dated: July 28, 2023

The Frederick County Health Department (FCHD) invites community partners to participate in a community led grant program with the theme of “Beyond Diet and Exercise”.

Donor Name: Frederick County Health Department (FCHD)

State: Maryland

County: Frederick County (MD)

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 08/06/2023

Size of the Grant: Up to $10,000

Grant Duration: 8 months

Details:

Ten (10) grants will be available to organizations to provide healthy weight management programs that focus on health disparities for women, particularly communities experiencing significant disparities; include interventions that consider more than diet and exercise; and focus on health determinants beyond the individual level.

  • Beyond Diet and Exercise
    • Healthy diet and exercise are the most well-known lifestyle change for obesity. Although activity levels and diet are critical to maintaining a healthy weight, body weight is also affected by other factors, such as stress and sleep. To combat obesity, they need to look at a variety of approaches. FCHD is looking to partner with community organizations to fund a variety of obesity prevention and treatment approaches. Examples could include: projects promoting and examining the effects of breastfeeding on postpartum weight reduction in the mother/ birthing person; the creation of peer groups for healthy eating; a community garden; screening for abnormal blood glucose levels and type 2 diabetes; promoting healthy mealtime rituals; workplace obesity prevention programs; and  interventions to increase habitual sleep time. These examples are for illustrative purposes only and align with the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, roundtable on obesity solutions. FCHD welcomes applications that include various intervention components and approaches.
  • Health determinants beyond the individual level
    • The FCHD is looking to shift from projects that are geared to the individual to projects that are more community-focused, and sustainable to reduce and ultimately eliminate health disparities. Community-level interventions include efforts to change community norms, attitudes, awareness, practices, and behaviors within entire populations within the community or within target groups within those populations (e.g., a community campaign to reduce the stigma associated with obesity; transforming community environments to create a culture of physical activity).
    • Helping more of the population reach healthier weight goals, reducing obesity and its consequences will require a whole community approach, including government, the private and nonprofit sectors, businesses, community organizations, healthcare professionals, families, and individuals. Projects that show collaboration between a variety of groups of the community are encouraged.

Grant Priorities

Priority consideration will be given to projects that provide interventions tailored to women, particularly communities experiencing significant disparities, and include:

  • Program components that focus on healthy weight management interventions that include more than diet and exercise
  • Community-level interventions
  • Detailed plans and methods to measure and evaluate the effect of an intervention or program on health or behavioral outcomes
  • Various community actors (e.g., individuals, families, local businesses, schools, etc.)
  • Coordination with other healthy weight and wellness initiatives, events, campaigns, and observances such as National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, Women’s Heart Week, and Frederick Pride
