Mini-Grant to support School Health Improvement Projects in Louisiana

Dated: September 29, 2023

To advance the physical and educational effects of activity, Well-Ahead Louisiana introduces the Healthy Schools Mini-Grant.

Donor Name: Well-Ahead Louisiana

State: Louisiana

Parish: All Parishes

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 10/16/2023

Size of the Grant: up to $3,000

Details:

The Healthy Schools Mini-Grant opportunity provides up to $3,000 to support school health improvement projects focused on increasing physical activity for students. This grant opportunity is available to elementary, middle, and high schools.

To promote health equity, applications from schools identified as having a higher need will be given priority. A school is considered to have a higher need when it is located in an area with:

  • A higher prevalence of chronic disease and risk factors
  • A majority of student populations that are highly impacted by chronic disease
  • Lower-performing academic achievement.

Make an Impact

Schools are in a unique position to help students attain the nationally recommended 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity. The goal of the Healthy Schools Mini-Grant is to provide school health teams with professional development, technical assistance, and funding to implement strategies supporting a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program. These strategies include:

  • Physical education
  • Physical activity during school
  • Physical activity before and after school
  • Staff involvement
  • Family and community engagement

Examples of Allowable Purchases

  • Playground equipment or supplies to enhance outdoor play (shade structures, inclusive equipment, safety surfacing/mulch, walking path installation and signage, etc.
  • Physical Education equipment (balls, hoops, bean bags, cones, etc.)
  • Items to support classroom physical activity (task cards, poly spots, etc.)
  • Items to support physical activity opportunities before and after school
  • Active Classroom or PE curriculum (e.g., SPARK).

Eligibility Criteria

A school is eligible to apply for the grant if it:

  • Is a public school in Louisiana enrolling students in any grades K-12, except those currently in partnership with Louisiana Healthy Schools
  • Has the support of the school principal and a lead point of contact located at the school
  • Is prepared to complete all grant requirements by June 30, 2024.

Funding Restrictions

  • The applicant must not use funds to discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or any other basis of discrimination prohibited by law.
  • Funds may not be used for prizes, incentives, or subscriptions.
  • Funds may not be used for salaries, lobbying or advocacy activities, or office equipment (such as computers, printers, pens, etc.).
  • Funds may not be used to cover the cost of previously purchased items, materials, or equipment.
