The Land and Water Conservation Fund State Assistance Program (LWCF) is a 50%-50% matching reimbursement grant program for the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation sites and facilities. A key feature of the program is that sites assisted with LWCF funding must be open, operated, and maintained in perpetuity as public outdoor recreation areas and may not be converted to other uses without suitable replacement and approval by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior.

The minimum award amount for the 2022 grant cycle is $250,000 and the maximum award amount is $2,000,000 depending on available funding at the time of award and total requests.
Eligible Projects
Eligible project types fall into three categories: acquisition, development, and combination acquisition and development.
Eligibility Criteria
- Municipalities (cities, towns, counties)
- Tribes (federal or state recognized)
- State agencies (Dept. of Forestry, Wildlife Resources, etc.)
- Regional park authorities identified in the Code of Virginia
- Land trusts, non-profit organizations, planning district commissions, associations, educational institutions, and private individuals are not eligible to receive LWCF funding.
