The goal is to fund projects in local communities and schools that are led by exceptional LGBTQ+ young people who have a vision for how to make them safer, bolder, and prouder places to be. Rather than focusing just on LGBTQ+ youth in partnership with their schools, the updated criteria allows LGBTQ+ youth to work with a local nonprofit to better their communities, or with educators or administrators to better their schools. With It Gets Better: Changemakers, they are providing the essential financial resources, training, and mentorship young leaders need to continue their path forward.
They are particularly interested in funding projects that support the following communities:
- LGBTQ+ youth of color
- Trans and nonbinary youth
- LGBTQ+ youth with disabilities
Funding Information
With grants available in increments from $500 to $10,000, no amount is too small to make huge changes in your community.
Grant Period
Grant recipients have up to one school year to utilize funding and to report back on impact.
Eligibility Criteria
- Clear youth leadership in the planning and execution of the proposed project; all applications must include at least one youth leader and one adult from the partner organization as signatories.
- Partner organization is either a nonprofit organization registered with the IRS or a public and/or charter secondary (middle/junior or high) school listed by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) that serves students between 13-18 years old.
- Unique project plan that demonstrates a clear understanding and actionable measures to meet the needs of LGBTQ+ youth in your community.
- Project plan must be executed within one school year.
- Limited to one application per organization.
- In addition to the cash reward, they provide additional benefits to the grantees, including:
- Year-long engagement opportunities with It Gets Better staff and fellow grantees
- Support from It Gets Better staff on their grant projects
- Dedicated educational materials to engage their LGBTQ+ students
- Placements in local and national media outlets
- Attendance at conferences for educators
- Speaking or writing opportunities with It Gets Better or partners.
