The Coldwater Main Street has launched a reimbursement-based Façade Restoration Initiative (FRI) grant program to incentivize high-impact, highly visible, and historically appropriate renovations of facades in downtown Coldwater.

Details:

The Initiative is funded by a $75,0000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) with an additional $37,500 of matching funds committed from the Coldwater Main Street budget for fiscal years 2024 (i.e., current year) and 2025. A total of $112,500 will be deployed towards a small number of transformative project.

Projects features may include but are not limited to: restoring bricked-in windows; uncovering and restoring transoms; removing mansard roofs; applying a multi-color paint scheme; installing awnings; tuckpointing and other structural repairs needed to accommodate more visible project activities; and other work.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Buildings must be located within the Main Street Area of Downtown Coldwater
  • Buildings must be contributing structures to the downtown Historic District (see the map on page 5).
  • Buildings that have been awarded rebate funds within the past five years are still eligible to apply; funding through this program will not be affected by past awards.
  • Properties owned by nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply. Properties must be current on taxes, if applicable.
  • Project plans must be historically appropriate, abide by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards of Rehabilitation, and reflect all local ordinances and codes.
  • Projects may span multiple buildings and/or multiple building owners, where appropriate. Consent for the proposed scope of work must be provided by all owners impacted.
  • An owner of multiple buildings may submit an application that packages two or more buildings, with independent design plans, if desired. Building and business owners are both eligible to apply.
  • Building owners must submit written consent for the scope of work planned by tenants. Only expenses incurred after the date that project awards are announced may be considered for reimbursement.
  • Any expense incurred prior to award announcement and an executed grant agreement is incurred at the sole risk of the entity making the expenditure.
