- Early Childhood Development
- Early childhood development is defined by the Foundation as the process of growth that occurs prenatally through the first five years of life. Improving the health and wellness of Spartanburg County through a focus on early childhood development will require efforts that address:
- Children’s relationships with families and other caregiver
- Children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development
- Adolescent pregnancy and improving birth outcomes
- Early childhood development is defined by the Foundation as the process of growth that occurs prenatally through the first five years of life. Improving the health and wellness of Spartanburg County through a focus on early childhood development will require efforts that address:
- Healthy Eating | Active Living
- Healthy Eating refers to the availability and affordability of fresh healthy foods in communities, schools, workplaces, and places of worship, regardless of income and geographic location.
- Active Living refers to a way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines. In addition to recreational exercise, active living includes moderate forms of activity such as walking or bicycling for transportation, taking the stairs, or working in the yard.
- Community Health Fund
- In addition to investing in Foundation’s two priority areas, the Mary Black Foundation promotes health and wellness in Spartanburg County, SC through the Community Health Fund (CHF). The CHF is an annual grantmaking opportunity for projects outside of the Foundation’s Early Childhood Development and Healthy Eating | Active Living priority areas and, generally, represents 10-20% of the Foundation’s total grantmaking.
- Health Equity Framework
- The Mary Black Foundation believes that health and wellness are basic human rights. A health equity framework guides in achieving their mission to invest in people and communities for improved health, wellness, and success in Spartanburg County. Health equity exists when all people have access to opportunities to thrive, both physically and mentally, and no one is limited in achieving health and wellness because of their race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, ability, sexual orientation, age, income, or zip code.
Funding Information
Grants funded through the Foundation’s two focus areas, Early Childhood Development and Healthy Eating | Active Living, vary greatly with an average size of $70,000. The average size grant funded through the Community Health Fund is $20,000. Grants outside of these ranges are awarded depending on the focus of the grant cycle or the size and scope of the proposal.
What MBF Funds
The Mary Black Foundation provides funding to 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations for the following:
- General Operating Support – to cover day-to-day activities and ongoing expenses.
- Programs & Services – activities directly targeting individuals to achieve specific results.
- Policies & Places – activities to change or modify policies or to create new or improved places that increase opportunities for the residents of Spartanburg County.
- Planning & Capacity Building – to plan for or study future projects or to implement efforts that improve the capacity of the organization to achieve results.

Eligibility Criteria
In order to receive funding from the Mary Black Foundation, an organization must be:
- A current 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, as classified by the IRS, or governmental agency; and
- Serving Spartanburg County, SC.
A core value of the Foundation is that they believe all people should have the opportunity to succeed. The Foundation supports and promotes equity, diversity, and inclusion at every level of the organization, including its grantmaking. The Foundation’s funds will not be used to carry out activities that are discriminatory or to support organizations engaged in discriminatory practices. This includes, but is not limited to, written or informal policies and procedures regarding staff and/or volunteer requirements, program content, or participant eligibility that are discriminatory.
