The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support the Central Biochemistry Laboratory (CBL) of the Chronic Kidney Disease in Children Study (CKiD) Consortium. The Division of Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic diseases (DKUHD) of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), in collaboration with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), invites applications from eligible applicants. This prospective cohort study began in response to a competitive FOA issued in 2002 and the consortium is composed of two Clinical Coordinating Centers (CCC), a Data Coordinating Center (DCC), and a Central Biochemistry Laboratory (CBL). The CKiD study will continue to follow all previously enrolled study participants with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those who have reached End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) treated by dialysis or kidney transplantation, using targeted, age-appropriate, hypothesis-driven data collection from periodic study visits.
Objectives and Scope
The overall objective of these companion FOAs is to invite the CKiD investigators to define relevant scientific questions that can be addressed using the CKiD cohort and infrastructure (CCCs, DCC, CBL and cooperating clinical sites). In addressing the goals of the CKiD Consortium, the goals of the CBL include, but are not limited to, those listed below:
- To work with the DCC and CCCs to develop protocol modifications and analytic strategies to answer novel, relevant scientific questions about the impact of childhood CKD in young adulthood.
- To work with the DCC and CCCs to develop and implement protocols for remote study visits and data collection that may augment or replace in-person visits.
- To work with the DCC and CCCs to determine the subset of participants who should continue to have iohexol GFR measurements to validate CKiD-derived formulae, to provide clinical sites with the reagents and protocol needed, and to analyze samples and provide the data to the DCC.
- To support the CKiD study by providing sample collection kits, shipment and storage of biological samples and by performing all central chemistry measurements dictated by the study protocol.
- To provide quality assurance activities for the consortium, ensuring that laboratory testing performed at the CBL and outside the CBL are comparable to previously standardized assays, maintain study data integrity, and enhance the generalizability of the CKiD eGFR formulae in clinical practice.
