The 2022 Environmental Justice Fellows Program is an 8-month program providing educational and leadership opportunities for City of Newburgh youth interested in the environment and the benefits of street trees in urban areas.

The program provides a paid opportunity for four (4) Environmental Justice Fellows, ages 19 through 25, to hone community grassroots organizing skills, build a professional network and resume, deepen an understanding of environmental issues, and help plant life-sustaining trees in all 4 wards of the City of Newburgh.

Fellowship program elements

Advocate, educate, collaborate and celebrate

  • Complete and help improve an online curriculum on the multiple benefits of street trees, as well as how to plant and care for them;
  • Learn hands-on how to care for and plant trees.
  • Travel together throughout the City of Newburgh talking with residents about the benefits of trees, especially in primarily Black and Latinx neighborhoods;
  • Listen and carefully record residents’ attitudes about having trees in their neighborhoods, including why they would or would not like to have a tree on their tree lawn to care for;
  • Circulate information in Spanish and English about street trees in various media, including hard copy flyers, social media posts, YouTube videos, etc.;
  • Promote tree-planting and tree-care in general, and the Environmental Justice program in particular, via communication with clubs, church, civic and social groups, and traditional media;
  • Encourage neighbors and local businesses to “spread the word” about the benefits of trees;
  • Help plan, promote and implement tree-focused community events, including tree stewardship workshops;
  • Present updates on program progress to City officials at City Council meetings, Conservation Advisory Council meetings, and GNPC Stakeholder meetings;
  • Under the supervision of a certified arborist, participate in the planting of 40 trees (8-12 in each Ward) in the spring and fall.
  • Help organize and participate in a celebration of the plantings, documenting these events in photos and videos;
  • Contribute to program reporting by documenting program activities and successes (text, photo, and video), compiling program data, and outlining lessons learned, achievements and recommendations.
