Apply Now for New City Arts Fellowship 2023 – Virginia

Dated: November 3, 2022

The New City Arts Fellowship creates space, time, and financial support for Charlottesville-area artists to make work in response to an annual open call and proposal theme.

Donor Name: New City Arts

State: Virginia

County: Albemarle County (VA), Greene County (VA), Nelson County (VA), & Louisa County (VA)

City: Charlottesville

Type of Grant: Fellowship

Deadline: 11/29/2022

Size of the Grant: $400

Details:

This year, the New City Arts Fellowship studio space will be located at Visible Records, an artist-run studio and gallery space in Charlottesville, Virginia. Following the Fellowship season (January 2023 – June 2023), New City Arts Fellows’ work will be on view in a culminating, month-long group exhibition at Welcome Gallery in July 2023 curated by this year’s Fellowship Guest Curator, Marisa Williamson. Each artist receives a month-long studio space grant, a $400 stipend, regular critiques, and a stocked pantry with their favorite drinks and snacks.

2023 Fellowship Theme: Soft Spot

  • This open call invites artists to consider the ways their work reveals unseen openings, sites of ongoing growth, unfused structures, and delicate parts that require gentleness and care.
  • Babies are born with soft spots on their heads. These soft spots allow us to escape the womb. They allow their minds to grow beyond that initial trauma. What soft spots do we still have hidden in our minds and bodies despite hardening to an adult world? Simultaneously, the soft spot is a metaphor.
  • This call invites artists from across disciplines into creative fellowship in order to cultivate and share their soft spots. A group exhibition that honors and investigates the power of this tenderness will be curated from what they produce.

What do Artist Fellows receive during their fellowship?

  • Each Artist Fellow receives a month-long studio space grant, a stipend, a stocked pantry with their favorite drinks and snacks, and an opportunity to present their work.
  • For the 2023 Fellowship, New City Arts is renting studio space at Visible Records. Studios include wall space for displaying works in progress as well as a shared kitchenette, common area, and bathroom. Artist Fellows may book the common area for events or use the common area to work in on a day-by-day basis. During their use of the studio, Fellows also get free access to any public ticketed events at Visible Records.

Fellowship Requirements

  • Given that the core of their mission is to foster engagement with the arts in Charlottesville, Virginia, they ask that Artist Fellows:
    • Spend a minimum of 5-10 hours per week in the studio
    • Lead one small event (a workshop, community sing, public reading, etc.) during their fellowship.
    • Participate in a Fellowship group show in July 2023.
    • The New City Arts Fellowship supports Charlottesville-area artists (including those who live in the city of Charlottesville or Albemarle, Greene, Nelson, & Louisa counties) working in any discipline (visual art, performance, poetry, etc).
    • Applicants must be available to occupy a studio space in-person for the duration of at least one month during the Fellowship period, Jan-June 2023.
