Empowering Futures: Chicago’s Save Our Boys Program Awards Scholarships to Black Youth

Dated: May 5, 2025

Several deserving students from Chicago Public Schools were honored at the 9th annual Save Our Boys scholarship ceremony held at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Auburn Gresham. This initiative aims to uplift Black youth by recognizing their achievements and providing financial support for their educational journeys.

Key Takeaways

  • The Save Our Boys program awarded scholarships to Black youth in Chicago Public Schools.
  • The event celebrated the achievements of students in both elementary and high school.
  • Special recognition was given to three students from Corliss High School, marking a historic moment for the school.
  • The scholarships aim to dispel negative stereotypes about young Black males.

Celebrating Academic Excellence

The Save Our Boys program has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for Black youth in Chicago. This year, the ceremony recognized students who have demonstrated leadership both in and out of the classroom. The event not only celebrated academic achievements but also highlighted the importance of community involvement and personal growth.

Among the recipients was Orbert Davis, a student at Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, who earned the Imani Scholarship. Davis wrote a compelling essay about his commitment to sustainable design and community development, particularly in underserved areas like Englewood. His story exemplifies the program’s mission to empower young men to make a difference in their communities.

Historic Achievements at Corliss High School

A significant highlight of the evening was the recognition of three young men from Corliss High School, who achieved the top three honors for the first time in the school’s history. This milestone not only reflects their hard work but also serves as a powerful statement against the stereotypes often associated with young Black males.

Deangelo Willis, one of the honorees and a candidate for salutatorian, shared his perspective on the challenges he faced as a minority student. "With me being a minority, I was always told to work harder than others. And work hard I did," he stated, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and dedication.

Inspiring Future Generations

The event was filled with inspiring speeches and testimonials from the young scholars, who expressed their commitment to academic excellence and community service. Amir Nesbeth, another recipient from Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, articulated the essence of being a scholar: "A scholar is someone who knows what needs to be done and is prepared to take any sacrifice and take accountability for whatever goal he has in mind."

These young men are not only breaking barriers but also setting a positive example for their peers and younger generations. Their achievements serve as a reminder of the potential that exists within the community and the importance of supporting one another.

Conclusion

The Save Our Boys program continues to play a vital role in uplifting Black youth in Chicago, providing them with the resources and recognition they need to succeed. As these young scholars embark on their future endeavors, they carry with them the hope and pride of their community, proving that with hard work and determination, they can achieve greatness.

This annual event not only celebrates individual accomplishments but also fosters a sense of unity and empowerment among Black youth in Chicago, paving the way for a brighter future.
