Funding Boost for Affordable Housing Development in Basile and Katy

Dated: February 6, 2025

In a significant move towards enhancing community living standards, the town of Basile, Louisiana, has secured a $250,000 grant aimed at removing blighted structures. This funding, part of the Louisiana Community Development Block Grant program, is expected to pave the way for improved housing conditions. Meanwhile, in Katy, Texas, a new affordable housing development is underway, promising to provide essential housing solutions for low-income families.

Key Takeaways

  • Basile, Louisiana, receives $250,000 for blight removal.
  • The funding aims to improve living conditions in the community.
  • A new $33 million affordable housing project is under construction in Katy, Texas.
  • The Katy development will offer 93 rental apartments, with a focus on low-income families.

Basile’s Community Development Grant

The town of Basile has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Louisiana Community Development Block Grant program, approved by Governor Jeff Landry. This funding will be utilized to remove blighted structures throughout the town, a move that is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents.

Mayor Mark Denette expressed gratitude for the support received during the grant application process, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Town Hall staff and the Town Council. He stated, "This grant is a vital step forward for our community. The removal of blighted structures will help to clean up our town and improve the quality of life for our residents."

Affordable Housing Development in Katy

In a parallel effort to address housing needs, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a $33 million affordable housing development in Katy, Texas. Named Palladium Park Row Katy Living, this project will feature 93 rental apartments, with 62% reserved for low-income families.

Harris County officials, including Commissioner Lesley Briones, attended the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of this development in light of rising eviction rates in the area. Briones remarked, "Behind every number is a family fighting to stay in their home. We are here to change that story. Together, we are turning challenges into solutions and dreams into reality."

Project Details

The Palladium Park Row Katy Living development will include:

  • Unit Types: One-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.
  • Amenities: Pool, fitness center, business center, children’s playroom, and clubhouse with kitchen facilities.
  • Funding Sources: The project is a collaboration between Palladium USA and the Harris County Housing Finance Corporation, with additional funding from the Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs, PNC Bank, and Harris County’s American Rescue Plan Act funds.

Future Impact

The Katy development is part of Harris County’s Multi-Family Development Program, which aims to provide housing for families earning 80% or less of the area’s median income. The project is expected to open its first apartments by December 2025, with completion slated for December 2026. Deed restrictions will ensure that the facility remains a place for low-income renters for the next 20 years.

Both the Basile grant and the Katy housing project represent crucial steps towards improving community living conditions and addressing the pressing need for affordable housing in these regions. As these initiatives unfold, they promise to create lasting positive impacts on the lives of many families.
