Local Student Sends Medical Supplies to India with SOS Initiative

Dated: October 20, 2024

A dedicated freshman from duPont Manual High School, Prisha Hedau, has taken significant steps to aid marginalized communities in India by sending medical supplies through a Louisville-based nonprofit, SOS International. This initiative not only highlights her commitment to global health equity but also showcases the power of youth activism in making a difference.

Key Takeaways

  • Prisha Hedau has been raising funds for an orphanage in India for seven years.
  • She is the first Global Student Ambassador for SOS International.
  • Medical supplies are being sent to Matru Sewa Sangh, an NGO in Nagpur, India.
  • The initiative involved collaboration with local students and community members.

Prisha’s Journey

Prisha’s journey began when she visited her mother’s hometown in India at the age of seven. Inspired by the conditions she witnessed, she started raising funds for an orphanage there, making it a tradition to donate every year on her birthday. This year, she decided to expand her efforts by launching a student-led initiative to send medical supplies to those in need.

"The idea that if we can’t be there in-person at least we can do our best to put a smile on someone’s face, to save a baby’s life, to help a mother, that really warms my heart," Prisha expressed. Her passion for global health equity drives her to continue her philanthropic work.

The Role of SOS International

SOS International is a health equity nonprofit based in Louisville, dedicated to supporting communities worldwide with essential resources. Prisha’s initiative aligns perfectly with the organization’s mission, and they have expressed their excitement in appointing her as their first student ambassador.

Denise Sears, CEO & President of SOS International, stated, "We are thrilled to appoint Prisha as our first student ambassador. Our Local Education program is aimed at inspiring and educating the next generation of global citizens, and Prisha exemplifies the qualities of a young global humanitarian."

Community Involvement

On a recent Saturday, Prisha, along with her parents and students from duPont Manual, Ballard High School, and Meyzeek Middle School, gathered to sort, prepare, and pack the medical supplies for shipment to India. This collaborative effort not only brought the community together but also raised awareness about the importance of health equity.

The medical supplies will be delivered to Matru Sewa Sangh, an NGO that works tirelessly to provide affordable healthcare facilities for marginalized populations in Nagpur. This partnership underscores the importance of local initiatives in addressing global health challenges.

Conclusion

Prisha Hedau’s initiative serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that young individuals can have on global issues. By leveraging her resources and community support, she is not only helping those in need but also inspiring others to take action. As she continues her journey as a Global Student Ambassador, her efforts will undoubtedly spark change and encourage more young people to engage in humanitarian work.
