Portland Youth Organize Thrift Pop-Up to Advocate for Free Student Transit

Dated: April 13, 2025

A vibrant thrift pop-up event in Southeast Portland, organized by the Multnomah Youth Commission, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of free public transit for students. The event not only showcased sustainable shopping but also served as a platform for advocating the expansion of the Youth Pass program, which provides free transportation to students across Oregon.

Key Takeaways

  • The event was organized by the Multnomah Youth Commission to promote sustainable transportation.
  • Youth Pass is a program that offers free transit for students, currently limited in availability.
  • Organizers are pushing for the inclusion of Youth Pass in the 2025 Oregon State Transportation Package.
  • The initiative aims to eliminate transportation barriers for students, particularly in East County.

The Importance of Youth Pass

The Youth Pass program is crucial for students, allowing them to travel to school, work, and extracurricular activities without the burden of transportation costs. Currently, students in Portland Public Schools benefit from this program, but many in East County are left waiting for access.

Celeste Ruiz, a member of the Multnomah Youth Commission, highlighted the disparities faced by students in areas like Park Rose, Reynolds, and Gresham. "While Portland Public Schools offer the Youth Pass, students in East County often find themselves on waitlists for Hop cards, which limits their mobility and opportunities," she explained.

Advocating for Change

The pop-up event featured various sustainable products and activities, all aimed at educating attendees about the Youth Pass and its benefits. Organizers emphasized the need for accessible transportation, especially for students who rely on public transit to participate in school and community events.

Ruiz stated, "We are working on expanding the Youth Pass and collaborating with organizations like 1000 Friends of Oregon to ensure it is included in the next transportation package. This is essential for students to have the freedom to engage in their communities without transportation barriers."

Future Goals

The Multnomah Youth Commission is actively advocating for the Youth Pass to be included in the 2025 Oregon State Transportation Package. This initiative aims to provide free, year-round transportation for students statewide, ensuring that all young people have equal access to educational and extracurricular opportunities.

Ruiz expressed hope that their efforts will lead to positive changes, stating, "We really hope that Youth Pass gets passed in the next transportation package and that our voices are heard. This is something we’ve been working on for a couple of years already on the commission."

Get Involved

For those interested in supporting this initiative or learning more about the Multnomah Youth Commission’s efforts, additional information is available on their website. The commission encourages community involvement to help amplify the voices of young people advocating for accessible transportation.

The thrift pop-up not only served as a creative outlet for youth expression but also highlighted the pressing need for equitable transportation solutions in Oregon. As the push for the Youth Pass continues, the hope is that all students will soon have the opportunity to travel freely and participate fully in their communities.
