Mission

Howard Gilman believed in the power of the arts to transform lives. In honoring his legacy, the Foundation provides funding and support to New York City-based performing arts organizations that are reflective of their City’s vibrant cultural community.

Eligibility Criteria

  • To be eligible for Gilman funding, an organization must be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization or fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3).
  • If your organization has 501(c)(3) status, it needs to:
    • Call New York City home (be incorporated in one of the five boroughs and primarily producing/presenting work in one or more of the five boroughs).
    • Have an operating budget (revenue and expenses) that exceeds $250K for the last completed fiscal year, the current fiscal year, and the next fiscal for which you are seeking funding.
    • Be able to provide one of the following:
      • an Independent Accountants’ Audit (if your operating budget is over $1M) OR
      • a financial report with an independent CPA’s review (if your operating budget is over $250K but under $1M) OR
      • your organization’s most recent 990 (if you just reached $250K and have not yet completed an audit or a review).
  • If your organization is fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3), it needs to:
    • Have an active Board of Trustees or Advisory Board separate from the fiscal sponsor.
    • Call New York City home (have a fiscal sponsor incorporated in one of the five boroughs and be primarily producing/presenting work in one or more of the five boroughs).
    • Have an operating budget (revenue and expenses) that exceeds $250K for the last completed fiscal year, the current fiscal year, and the next fiscal for which you are seeking funding.
    • Be able to provide for the applicant or fiscal sponsor one of the following:
      • an Independent Accountants’ Audit (if your/their operating budget is over $1M) OR
      • a financial report with an independent CPA’s review (if your/their operating budget is over $250K but under $1M) OR
      • the most recent 990 (if you/they just reached $250K and have not yet completed an audit or a review.
