This investment process represents one of the ways United Way adds value to the community and fulfills the mission is to improve lives by harnessing the caring power of the community to advance the common good in south central Kansas.
Investment Priorities
Funding priorities were established to address the needs of the community and create opportunity for all people to achieve their human potential. United Way of the Plains seeking applications from nonprofit organizations that provide programs in alignment with the focus areas below:
- Health: They are fighting to help people thrive no matter their age, ethnicity or zip code. Whether it’s increasing access to medical care and mental health services, making physical activity accessible and fun, or making nutritious food available to families and in neighborhoods. They are giving people the tools they need to get healthy and stay healthy.

- Financial Stability: The Community Impact area of financial stability is seeking programs with dynamic approaches to address financial stability that help individuals get out of poverty and stay out of poverty. Qualified programs will address financial literacy, workforce development, and/or pathways to homeownership. United Way of the Plains defines these priorities as follows.

- Basic Needs: United Way of the Plains is committed to addressing basic needs for individuals in times of crisis allowing those that they serve to elevate themselves to our focus areas of health, education and financial stability. Their Basic Needs focus area works to eliminate barriers for the most vulnerable citizens in community. They work with partners providing services and assistance to cover the essentials. The efforts bring stability to community members to help them get back on track. Meeting a person’s basic needs is the first step to identifying underlying, complex and long-term issues.

Eligibility Criteria
The following requirements must be met for an application to receive funding through the Community Impact Fund process:
- The organization must be a 501(c)(3).
- The proposed program must concentrate its efforts and services within the

- The proposed program must align with one of United Way’s strategies in Health, Education, Financial Stability and Basic Needs.
- United Way does not fund grants to individuals, art/cultural organizations, animal services, capital needs or environmental concerns.
- Organizations must not discriminate based on race, color, national or ethnic origin, ancestry, age, religion, disability, medical condition, sex or gender (including pregnancy), gender identity and/or expression (including transgender identity), sexual orientation, marital status, military or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected under applicable federal, state, or local law.
