The City of Alvin levies a municipal hotel occupancy tax, which is paid by hotel customers under the guidelines set forth in the Texas Tax Code, Chapter 351. Revenue from the hotel occupancy tax fund may be used only to directly promote tourism and the convention and hotel industry. Section 351.101 of the Texas Tax Code stipulates that the use of hotel occupancy tax funds must directly enhance and promote tourism and the convention and hotel industry, as well as comply with one (1) of the following nine categories:
- Funding the establishment, improvement, or maintenance of a convention center or visitor information center.
- Paying the administrative costs for facilitating convention registration.
- Paying for advertising, solicitations, and promotions that attract tourists and convention delegates to the city or its vicinity.
- Expenditures that promote the arts.
- Funding historical restoration or preservation programs.
- Funding certain expenses, including promotional expenses, directly related to a sporting event within counties with a population of under one million.
- Funding the enhancement or upgrading of existing sports facilities or sports fields for certain municipalities.
- Funding transportation of tourists from hotels to attractions.
Funding Information
The standard annual appropriation from the HOT Funds for grants will be $40,000 (based on available funds and state law) with a maximum an event can receive being $20,000.
Eligibility Criteria
HOT Grants are open to any local organization located in the city limits of Alvin. To be eligible, projects must meet ALL of the following criteria:
- Organization must be located within the city limits of Alvin
- Funds must be used for project/event development and public awareness
- Recipients must show the impact they have on hotel/motel and tourism industry.
