The GCRA’s Business Improvement Grant (BIG) Program offers up to $150,000 to help businesses repair and improve their physical spaces. This funding is available through the City of Gainesville in Florida.
The grant is reimbursable at 50% and supports projects such as fixing or upgrading building systems like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical. It also covers repairs for structural safety, improvements to the building’s façade including signs and awnings, landscaping, security upgrades, and meeting ADA compliance standards.
Funding is divided into three tiers. Tier 1 offers up to $5,000 with a 100% match required, allowing reimbursement for the full cost of smaller projects. Tier 2 offers up to $50,000 with a 50% match, reimbursing half the project cost. Tier 3 provides up to $150,000 with a 50% match, but requires the building to have a historic designation.
The grant covers both exterior and interior work, including permanent internal systems, façade restoration, landscaping, security updates, and ADA renovations. Projects must be completed within an 18-month period.
Eligible applicants include private businesses and nonprofits, but residential and government facilities do not qualify. Residential properties include single or multi-family homes and short-term rental properties. Private businesses leasing government-owned facilities are eligible.
Applicants must provide proof of current business tax payment with the City of Gainesville or demonstrate exemption as determined by city staff.
