The J.E. & Z.B. Butler Foundation aspires to create a more accepting world in which people of all abilities are understood, valued, and respected.
The Butler Foundation funds innovative, inclusive programming in which people of all abilities can learn from one another and respect each person’s unique abilities. the priority is to provide the resources for individuals with physical, developmental, and learning disabilities to engage in meaningful endeavors that bolster engagement and self-esteem, teach self-advocacy and build competencies that will enhance their lives.
Funding focuses on after-school, summer, vacation and work readiness programs that include educational supports, social and recreational activities, leadership development, mentoring, community involvement and employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Key to the success of this work is the professional development of staff working in programs for people with disabilities and collaboration among community organizations.

Eligibility Criteria
- Organizations must be tax-exempt under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
- The Foundation ONLY supports programs in the New York Metropolitan and Boston Areas.
- Grants to capital campaigns, endowments and research projects are generally not considered.
- Individuals, annual giving programs, educational institutions or religious organizations are not eligible.
- Grants are generally awarded for one year. Occasionally the Foundation will consider multi-year grants.
- All grants are subject to yearly review.
- The Foundation values creative, interactive engagement with the funding partners. They encourage the grantees to build on successful projects by seeking additional funders to ensure the long term viability of their programs. It is the goal of the Foundation, that after several years of funding, projects will be on steady ground and they will move on to seed new projects.
