- NIJ seeks applications to conduct research and evaluation on preventing and addressing hate crimes in the following four topics:
- Category 2: Research and Evaluation on School-Based Hate Crimes
- Reported hate crimes in K-12 schools more than doubled between 2018 and 2022. These incidents negatively impact the learning of targeted students and the wider school community and can have serious consequences for K-12 youth, creating an atmosphere of tension and fear that undermines the ability of all students to learn.14 Understanding school-based hate crimes and developing effective strategies to prevent them and combat their effects is necessary to create safe learning environments for young students. Multiple resources have been created, and schools across the nation have implemented strategies to prevent and reduce the effects of school-based incidents.15 However, research is needed to better understand school-based hate crimes to inform policy and practice, and evaluations of strategies being employed in schools are needed to understand their effectiveness and inform implementation.
- Under this category, NIJ seeks applications for rigorous research and evaluation on hate crimes in the K-12 education system, specifically in two areas:
- Research to understand the nature of and response to school-based hate crimes.
- Outcome evaluations of school-wide or individual-level programs, practices, and strategies to prevent and respond to school-based hate crimes.
