Funded by the Strong Future ballot measure approved by voters in 2018, these competitive grants are designed to help local entities and government agencies prevent and reduce waste.
To work toward Summit County’s community goal of 40% waste diversion by 2035, Summit County Government created the Strong Future Community Grants program to provide funding for projects that prevent waste or increase local waste diversion. High Country Conservation Center (HC3) manages the program, which has $400,000 allocated for grants in 2026. Grants are funded through the Strong Future Mill Levy, approved by Summit County voters in 2018. There are multiple grant levels this year; the pool for this application is $160,000. If your project is between $1,000 and $24,999 or intended to bring your HOA into compliance with the Universal Recycling Ordinance.
Types of Grant Projects
- Large Grant Projects: For larger projects looking for $25,000 – $75,000
- Mid Level Grant Projects: Have a great idea for a waste prevention or recycling project, but don’t quite need $25k or more to make it happen? Apply for a Mid Level Grant. Grants will be awarded to projects in the $1,000 to $24,999 range.
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible Applicants: Private sector entities (for-profit and nonprofit organizations) in good standing with Colorado Secretary of state, public and government agencies, and schools are eligible to apply. Individuals are not eligible to apply.
- Eligible Project Types:
- Projects must achieve measurable results in one or more of the following areas. Projects must occur in and benefit Summit County and be sustainable beyond the grant period.
- Prevent or reduce waste.
- Increase reuse of materials.
- Increase recycling or composting access for underserved and/or workforce population(s).
- Increase recycling or composting, creating measurable diversion of materials from the landfill.
- Divert construction and demolition waste from the landfill.
- Create innovative programs/services that increase current or future diversion.
