TA encompasses a variety of smaller-scale non-motorized transportation projects such as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, recreational trails, safe routes to school projects, community improvements such as historic preservation and vegetation management, and environmental mitigation related to storm water and habitat connectivity.
Funding Information
- Approximately $9 million is available.
- Projects may be limited to $600,000 depending on annual funding allowance. The minimum for infrastructure projects will be $50,000.
Eligible Activities
- Construction, planning, and design of on-road and off-road trail facilities.
- Construction, planning, and design of infrastructure-related projects and systems that will provide safe routes for non-drivers.
- Conversion and use of abandoned railroad corridors for trails. Under this activity, the trails may be for pedestrians, bicyclists or other non-motorized transportation users.
- Construction of turnouts, overlooks, and viewing areas.
- Planning and implementation of community improvement activities.
- Environmental Mitigation activities may include, but are not limited, to pollution prevention and pollution abatement activities and mitigation to: Address storm water management, control and water pollution prevention or abatement related to highway construction or due to highway runoff, including participation in natural habitat and wetlands mitigation efforts related to projects funded under Title 23. These mitigation efforts may include participation in natural and wetlands mitigation banks; contributions to statewide and regional efforts to conserve, restore, enhance, and create natural habitats and wetlands; and development of statewide and regional natural habitat and wetlands conservation and mitigation plans, environmental restoration and pollution abatement, and the control of noxious weeds; and
- Reduce vehicle-caused wildlife mortality or restore and maintain connectivity among terrestrial or aquatic habitats.
- Implementation of the Safe Routes to School Program (under section 1404 of the SAFETEA-LU) including, but not limited to Infrastructure-related projects defined as the planning, design and construction of projects on any public road or any bicycle or pedestrian pathway or trail in the vicinity of schools that will substantially improve the ability of students to walk and bicycle to school.
- Boulevards and other roadways largely in the right-of-way of former Interstate System routes or other divided highways.
Eligibility Criteria
The following entities are eligible to apply for Transportation Alternatives project funding: local governments, regional transportation authorities, transit agencies, natural resources or public lands agencies, school districts, local education agencies or schools, tribal governments, local or regional government with responsibility for oversight of transportation or recreational trails that the State determines to be eligible consistent with the goals any registered nonprofit entity responsible for the administration of local safety program, Metropolitan Planning Organization with a population 200,000 or fewer, a State request of another eligible entity, or a nonprofit organizations.
