Tracks
- Emerging Needs Grant
- Emerging Needs Grants provide flexible, rapid-response funding for nonprofits facing an unexpected challenge, sudden funding loss, or urgent community need. These grants help organizations stabilize quickly, adapt services, and continue meeting essential needs across Central Minnesota.
- Priority Consideration
- Organizations experiencing a sudden, recent loss of state or federal fundin
- Organizations serving residents often left out of traditional funding, including rural communities, elders, veterans, people with disabilities, and culturally rooted or identity-based communities.
- Organizations providing services in basic needs, economic programs, support for individuals impacted by crime or discrimination, and non-clinical mental health and substance use services
- Organizations headquartered in and primarily serving the Initiative Foundation service region.
- Nonprofit Capacity Building Grant
- Capacity Building Grants support strategic efforts that strengthen a nonprofit’s effectiveness and long-term sustainability. Capacity building focuses on long-term improvements rather than day-to-day service delivery.
- Capacity Building Additional Considerations
- Nonprofits that have engaged with Nonprofit Academy training within the last six months may receive priority consideration
- The Initiative Foundation strives to achieve geographic equity in grantmaking across its service region
- Priority consideration may be given to organizations with at least three years of continuous programming.

- Nonprofit Capacity Building Grant
- Maximum Grant Amount: Up to $10,000
Eligibility Criteria
- Emerging Needs Grant
- Must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
- Must currently work in the Initiative Foundation’s 14-county service region and eligible Native Nations areas
- Must have previous fiscal year actual expenses between $100,000 and $2 million
- Nonprofit Capacity Building Grant
- Must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (government entities and public schools are not eligible; fiscal sponsorships are not eligible)
- Must currently work in the Initiative Foundation’s 14-county service region and eligible Native Nations areas
- Must have a minimum of three years of continuous programming
- Must have previous fiscal year actual expenses below $2 million
- Must provide services in basic needs, economic programs, support for individuals impacted by crime or discrimination, and/or non-clinical mental health and substance use services

Both tracks do not fund organizations primarily focused on:
- Arts, culture, theater, music
- Environmental preservation
- Healthcare delivery or clinical services
- Historical preservation
- Camps
